Looking for a fun way to record and organize your thoughts, engage in creative play, and improve your mood? Junk journaling just might be the activity for you. This hands-on workshop will guide you through the process of creating, decorating, and using your own junk journal. Junk journals are a great way to express your creativity, preserve memories, and keep track of your thoughts and ideas using unexpected and unusual materials.

What You'll Learn:
- How to gather and prepare materials for your junk journal
- Basic bookbinding techniques
- How to create your own ephemera and embellishments – including washi tape
- How to decorate your journal with collage, mark-making tools, and other embellishments
How to Use Your Junk Journal
- The first rule of junk journaling is “there are no rules in junk journaling.”
- Use it as a regular journal, a planner, a sustainable scrapbook, or a personal gift.
- Make a personal cookbook of favorite recipes to share with a friend
- Make it a reading journal about your favorite books
Some Suggested Materials:
- Junk Mail – especially security envelopes
- Stickers and canceled postage stamps
- Magazine covers and pages
- Pages from salvaged thrift store books
- Old notebooks or tablets, including shopping lists and to-do lists
- Tags from clothing items, buttons, fabric scraps
- Washi and masking tape
- Gift wrap paper
Some Page Ideas:
- Pockets – make a pocket with paper and tape
- Envelopes – glue in a small envelope to fill with ephemera or notes
- Photos and frames – add pictures or frame for favorite quotes
- Flips and Waterfalls – add stapled or sewn collections of paper to your pages
- Fold-out pages – tape an page or accordion of pages to the edge and decorate
Some Prompts
- Finish a thought such as “I’m excited about…” or “I’m happy because…”
- Explore your intentions by choosing a word or words for the day/week/month/year
- Collect your favorite quotations and write or illustrate how they make you feel
- List your favorite accomplishments
- Pick a limited color palette and fill the pages with different hues and values
